With a population of around 10'000 inhabitants Fort William is the largest town in the Scottish Highlands since Inverness received city status. The original settlement in the area was that of Inverlochy, which was the site of the battle of Inverlochy back in 1645. This was the main settlement before the construction of the fort, which was built to police the local inhabitant's after Oliver Cromwell's invasion at the time of the English civil war. In later years during the 18th Century the fort was used as a garrison to subdue the Jacobite uprisings that then threatened stability. Fort William takes its name from the Fort (fortification) that was previously mentioned. The Fort was named after William of Orange and the settlement that grew around it took the name of Maryburgh after William's wife Mary II. The town name was later changed to Gordonsburgh then Duncansdurgh before reverting to Fort William. The town as it stands today is located at the North end of Loch Linnhe in the footstep Scotland's Highest Mountain, Ben Nevis.
